Langzauner, a pioneer in the field of advanced hydraulic press systems, has made a breakthrough in aerospace manufacturing technology through its collaboration with the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).
AMRC's Composites at Speed and Scale (COMPASS) is a major boost to research and development in the UK aerospace industry with a new open-access innovation facility that will initially house industry leader Boeing's research project to de-risk and develop sustainable high-speed structures.
At the heart of this innovation is Langzauner's newly developed RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) press system, the largest of its kind in the world for integral aircraft components. By using this state-of-the-art press system, process times for large components are to be reduced tenfold - from around 40 hours to just four hours - while maintaining exceptional quality standards.
"This technology represents a quantum leap in aerospace manufacturing capabilities," said Alexander Wiesner, Head of Global Sales & Marketing at Langzauner. "We are not just building equipment, we are revolutionizing the way the next generation of aircraft is manufactured."
The press system has an impressive panel size of 10,500 mm x 3,500 mm and offers unprecedented precision with a fully adjustable press force of up to 2,400 tons.
Revolutionary features of the system include:
The system is fully integrated with IIoT capabilities, enabling comprehensive data collection for artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in factory-scale process optimization.
Darren Wells, Senior Technical Fellow for Large Composite Structures at the AMRC, said: "When we created the specification for such a ground-breaking device, we knew we had set the bar very high for what was achievable.
Langzauner's solution not only meets all of our targets, but exceeds them in many ways, so this press will be at the forefront of high performance composite manufacturing research for years to come.
Langzauner's commitment to vertical integration is also evident in the ongoing assembly of a large-scale Hot Drape former for RTM preform preparation, ensuring a complete solution for the next generation requirements of the aerospace industry."
This development positions Langzauner at the forefront of aerospace manufacturing technology and supports the industry's efforts to develop more efficient, sustainable and scalable production methods for future generations of aircraft.
